Blood Diamond

The film presents a country divided by the struggle between and rebel forces government soldiers set during the Sierra Leone Civil War in 1999. The movie portrays several instances of the violence of the war, including the amputation of people’s hands to prevent them from voting. ‘Blood Diamond’ is the story of two men with desperate missions; one is to get hold of a rare and valuable pink diamond and the other one is to rescue his son from the hands of the rebels. The two embark on a dangerous journey into the rebel territory as they experience the conflict of Diamond bloodshed.

The ex-mercenary Leonardo DiCaprio plays Danny Archer, who turns out to be a smuggler. Djimon Hounsoue plays Solomon Vandy, a fisherman who discovers the diamond when he is captured by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). He buries the stone, thinking that it might be the only way to get back to his family. While he is in prison, Danny overhears an angry RUF leader saying that Vandy has the diamond. He gets him out of jail and offers to help him find his family in exchange for half of the precious stone’s worth. At first, idealistic American journalist Maddie Bowen (Jennifer Connolly) refuses to help Archer unless he tells her about the diamond market to stop the flow of blood diamonds in Africa. She finds Vandy’s wife and daughters in a refugee camp and informs them that Dia Vandy, Solomon’s son, has been recruited by the rebels. They consolidate a partnership and start their journey in the middle of the bloody action in pursuit of the prize.

The film is likely to provide a worrying but educational insight into a world many people know little about. There is a great deal of violence in this movie but it is fitting with what is really happening in the world. It is a great movie that everyone should not fail to watch.
